Project Description

This architectural garden room in wrought iron and glass was realised in Zwevegem and forms part of a landscaped garden set in the open countryside.

Surrounded by fields and characteristic pollard willows, this freestanding structure is an elegant and functional addition to the garden, entirely dedicated to growing and caring for plants directly in the ground.

The garden room was designed as a fully fledged greenhouse, with particular attention to creating optimal growing conditions.

At the same time, its architectural design contributes to the aesthetic quality of the garden and the surrounding landscape.

Although this type of garden room is primarily intended as a growing space for plants, it can also fulfil other functions. In practice, this concept is likewise used:

Freestanding and harmoniously integrated into the landscape

In contrast to a lean-to veranda or garden room, a fully freestanding layout was deliberately chosen here.

This allows the structure to retain its own identity within the garden and to be optimally oriented in relation to the sun.

The slender wrought iron profiles and curved roof give the structure a timeless appearance that contrasts elegantly with the green landscape, without becoming visually dominant.

Thanks to the transparent glazing, views of the surroundings are preserved and the garden room does not form a visual barrier in the garden.

Designed for planting in open ground

This architectural garden room in wrought iron and glass was specifically designed for plants grown directly in the soil.

The ground surface was therefore not fully paved. Only a narrow row of tiles runs lengthwise through the greenhouse, serving as a central walkway.

On either side of this path are the planting beds, allowing plants to root freely in the ground.

This makes it possible to grow crops in natural conditions, with sufficient root space and a healthy, living soil.

The layout is both practical and efficient, allowing for orderly planting and easy access to each plant for care and maintenance.

Protection and extension of the growing season

One of the key advantages of this garden room is the protection it offers against Belgium’s changeable weather.

Rain, wind and sudden temperature drops can have a major impact on young plants and sensitive crops. Thanks to the glazed enclosure, these influences are largely kept at bay.

In addition, the greenhouse significantly extends the growing season. Sowing and planting can begin earlier in spring, while harvesting can continue longer into autumn.

The combination of solar warmth and shelter creates a stable microclimate that is beneficial for a wide range of plants.

Smart ventilation system for a healthy climate

To prevent overheating in summer and to ensure good air circulation, this garden room is equipped with automatic ventilation openers.

These systems respond to temperature changes and open or close the windows fully automatically, without the need for electricity.

  • When the temperature inside the greenhouse rises, the openers gradually open the windows.
  • When the temperature drops again, they close automatically.

This ensures a stable indoor climate and reduces the risk of mould, dehydration or heat stress for the plants.

Craftsmanship and precision in wrought iron and glass

As with every DBG Classics project, this garden room was manufactured entirely to measure.

The curved roof structure, the distribution of the glazed panels and the integration of doors and ventilation windows were carefully tailored to the intended use.

The wrought iron was finished in a dark, understated colour that allows the glass to visually dominate.

The construction appears light and refined, yet is robust, durable, and resistant to intensive use and weather conditions throughout the seasons.

For your information: Other RAL colours are also available, as illustrated by this attached greenhouse in beige and brown.

A functional garden room with architectural added value

This architectural garden room in wrought iron and glass shows how functionality and aesthetics can go hand in hand.

It provides optimal conditions for open-ground gardening, extends the growing season and protects plants from adverse weather conditions, while at the same time adding considerable value to the garden as a whole.

The result is a greenhouse that is not only practical, but also contributes to the calm, structure and overall experience of the landscape.
