Project Description
For this project in Zwalm, DBG Classics designed and built an elegant veranda with curved and toughened glass, attached to a characterful rural home.
The result is a sheltered, light-filled space that integrates seamlessly with the existing architecture while adding a contemporary layer of comfort. Rather than a traditional garden greenhouse, this veranda was conceived as a versatile additional space that can be used throughout the year.
The curved roofline and refined wrought-iron profiles create a smooth transition between house and garden. The transparent glazing ensures maximum natural light, while the solid structure provides protection against wind, rain and winter cold.
A veranda as an extension of the home
This attached veranda was positioned entirely against an existing gable wall, forming a natural extension of the house.
Inside, a fully paved floor allows the space to be comfortably furnished as a veranda or garden room. It offers a place to relax, read, entertain guests or simply enjoy views of the garden, regardless of the season.
Although the space is not intended for planting directly in the ground, it also provides excellent conditions for overwintering potted plants. The toughened glass protects against frost, strong winds and precipitation, while still allowing plants to benefit from ample daylight.
In this way, the veranda brings together the best of both worlds: residential comfort and functional protection.
The veranda with curved and toughened glass as an architectural focal point
The curved roof in toughened glass is undoubtedly the most striking feature of this veranda.
Its form lends the structure a soft, elegant appearance that fits perfectly within the rural context of the home. At the same time, the curvature ensures efficient water drainage and creates a pleasant sense of spaciousness inside.
Toughened glass was deliberately chosen for its safety, durability and resistance. This type of veranda can also serve as a multifunctional space in a commercial setting, as illustrated by this reception area in Kraainem near Brussels and this glass roof structure in Paris.
It withstands temperature fluctuations and mechanical stress, such as heavy hailstorms, which is essential for a structure exposed to the elements year-round.
Combined with slender, black-finished wrought-iron profiles, the result is a refined and timeless design.
Bespoke craftsmanship down to the smallest detail
As with every DBG Classics project, this veranda was designed entirely to measure:
- Dimensions, curved forms and connections were carefully aligned with the existing façade and the available surface area.
- The low masonry wall provides a solid base and blends harmoniously with the brickwork of the house.
- Ventilation windows were discreetly integrated along the full length, allowing the space to be easily ventilated on warmer days.
- Central doors in the side walls ensure smooth circulation and access to the garden, reinforcing the sense of openness and connection with the outdoors.
Light, calm and shelter throughout the year
Thanks to the large glazed surfaces, this veranda is filled with natural light, even on overcast days. At the same time, it offers comfortable protection from wind and rain, making the space usable in every season.
In spring and autumn, the veranda functions as a sheltered outdoor room, while in winter it becomes a bright buffer zone between house and garden.
It also benefits from the thermal mass of the gable wall, which can absorb heat on sunny days and release it gradually as radiant warmth.
This veranda with curved and toughened glass demonstrates how thoughtful bespoke design can enhance living comfort without compromising the charm of an existing home.
