Project Description

This classic bespoke lean-to greenhouse in Zwevegem was built against the white façade of a rural home.

The structure rests on a half-height or dwarf wall and the impressive curved roof immediately catches the eye. A piece of bespoke craftsmanship you do not come across every day.

Step inside and you are instantly greeted by the scent of soil and tomato plants. This is a fully-fledged growing greenhouse with beds in open soil where sowing and harvesting continue throughout the season.

Are you dreaming of this type of classic lean-to greenhouse against your own façade?

Then do read on, because below we take a closer look at the design, the chosen materials and the choice between self-build (DIY kit) and installation by our team.

Classic bespoke lean-to greenhouse in Zwevegem with curved roof

What sets this classic lean-to greenhouse apart from a standard wall-mounted model? The curved roofline.

Most lean-to greenhouses have a simple straight roof. Here, the roof flows in a graceful wave from the façade down to the low wall.

Each wrought-iron profile was individually curved and precisely fitted to achieve that perfect curve.

The result is a beautiful roofline that lets the sunlight through from morning until evening while tracing an elegant silhouette against the white façade.

The contrast between the black wrought iron and the white façade enhances the classic character of this rural home in Zwevegem. And it does so without blocking or interrupting the view of the surrounding garden.

Fond of curved glazing? We also offer curved and tempered glass in a single piece for an even sleeker finish.

A true growing greenhouse: Traditional kitchen gardening

Many of our projects are furnished as living spaces or as a classic veranda.

This lean-to greenhouse in Zwevegem, however, returns to the origins of the greenhouse: growing your own vegetables, herbs and fruit.

Inside you will find growing beds in open soil. The tomato plants thrive there thanks to the abundant daylight and the stable indoor climate.

An integrated drip irrigation system can deliver water straight to the roots of the crops if desired.

Along the walkway, white shelving units against the wall hold pots, seedlings and all manner of gardening tools. Everything has its place.

The greenhouse thus becomes the sheltered extension of the classic kitchen garden. A place to sow and harvest. But equally a place to linger for a while and unwind.

And during the winter months, the greenhouse shelters delicate container plants, which overwinter there safely. It never stands empty a single day of the year.

Double natural ventilation: Vents in the roof and at knee height

A healthy growing climate depends entirely on good air circulation. That is why this lean-to greenhouse was fitted with a dual ventilation system.

At the top of the curved roof, ventilation windows release warm air in a controlled way. At the front, at knee height, additional vents let cooler air in.

This interplay creates a natural ventilation effect. Cool air flows in at the bottom, warms up and then escapes at the top along the roof.

The indoor climate remains pleasant and stable, even on hot summer days! This is essential for successful tomato growing and for your own comfort.

The ventilation windows can optionally be fitted with automatic vent openers.

These mechanical openers respond to the temperature inside and open and close entirely on their own, without electricity, using oil that expands and contracts.

A half-height wall as a solid base

This lean-to greenhouse does not rest directly on the ground but on a half-height brick wall topped with natural stone.

This wall does more than you might think:

  • Solid anchoring: The wrought-iron structure is firmly anchored to a durable base.
  • Thermal buffer: The bricks absorb the heat of the day and release it gradually at night. Good news for the microclimate inside the greenhouse.
  • Aesthetic harmony: The brickwork blends seamlessly with the garden path and the classic style of the home.

This configuration, with glass and profiles resting on a low wall, is just one of the many possibilities offered by our bespoke work.

By way of comparison, also have a look at the following custom garden conservatory placed on a low steel base.

Wrought iron and glass: Durable craftsmanship by DBG Classics

Like all our projects, this lean-to greenhouse was made entirely of wrought iron and glass.

Wrought iron is exceptionally strong and, when properly treated, offers excellent corrosion resistance while ageing gracefully. The slender black profiles look elegant without compromising on sturdiness.

The high-quality glass ensures maximum daylight and protects the crops from rain and wind.

As for maintenance, there is little to worry about. An annual check of the hinges, vents and any vent openers is all it takes.

The result is a structure that will still look as magnificent twenty years from now as on the day of installation. Explore our other projects for inspiration.
